Back To The Airport

I just brought out my airport boards to work on … And hopefully finally finish up.  A few of them have developed a bit of a warp while in storage ,,, gotta try to get that sorted out before going any further.

Airport Boards

Update… I clamped down all the corners of the boards … I’ll leave them like this for a day or two and see what happens.  Hoping for the best.
If this does not work perhaps I’ll have get the back sides of the boards moist and then clamp them down and let them dry like that.  Fingers crossed, I’m not really interested in starting over on these.

Help Me Decide…

Warning, the geek level in this post is off the charts.

Quite often when people play wargames, they create a fictitious country where the campaign takes place.  Some even go as far as creating elaborate backstories, armies, flags, etc for the country and even placed it on the world map.

For many years my go-to country name for fictitious battles has been “Malakastan”.  I have not gone as far as to dream up a backstory or a location or create an army for it ,,, but tonight i thought it would be fun to create a flag that I can hang in my game room.

Here are the two candidates that I’ve come up with.  As you can see, they are nearly identical but I’m stuck on the crown color.  I like the yellow, but wonder if it blends into the background too much.  Also is the red too much?  If so, what color would you use?

Which do you like?

Argentinian TAM Tank

I put together 5 TAM tanks tonight.  These are the medium tanks used by the Argentinian Army.  The vehicle is based on the Marder APC with a turret that is based on the Leopard 1A4.

To make these I used GHQ Marders (N41) and turrets from GHQ Leopard 1A4s (N72).  In reality the turret on the TAM has a slightly different shape to the back half of the turret, but the standard GHQ Leopard 1A4 is close enough in my opinion.

TAC II Rulebook Hardcopy Now Available

The TAC II Rule Book is available from GameCraft Miniatures online store. This is a printed and bound version of the free PDF version that is available at www.tac2game.com

TAC II is the gaming system that I use for all my Micro Armor games, however the rules and vehicle/weapons data are in meters so the rules can be used with any scale minis.

The rules for TAC II are free via PDF download to anyone that wants them, this printed version is priced to only cover my expenses of having it printed, there is no profit for me in selling this book, this is something I’m doing because I want to.

If you are not familiar with my TAC II project, go to www.tac2game.com for all the info on it.

Please read the entire product description in the store including the important disclaimer.

More Progress on the USS Wasp Superstructure

Added all the doors, ladders and some vent thingies on the outside of the stacks.  Also began construction of the antenna/radar/sensor towers.

I’m actually beginning to feel like the end of this project is near.  There is virtually no end to the level of detail I can add to this model … but the bottom line is that it’s a gaming piece, not a museum quality model.  There is plenty of detail yet to be applied but I’m not going to go nuts with tiny details that will make the model too fragile to use for it’s intended purpose.

GHQ Miniatures 1/285th Scale?

Well there seems to be some discussion online about GHQ’s new Puma IFV being a bit oversized.  I don’t have one to measure but when I get one I’ll do some research into this.

While discussing this with a friend of mine he said “how about their toyota pickup?, it’s way too big”.  It looked a bit big to me too so I did some research.

Here are the dimensions of the GHQ Toyota Pickup

Length .7445″ x 285 = 212″
Width .251 x 285 = 71.5
Height  .2395 x 285 = 68.25″

Here are the dimensions of the actual Toyota Helix pickup crew cab (assuming 5th or 6 generation)

Length 188″
Width 70.5
Height  65″

Conclusion, the GHQ Toyota Pickup is close to 1/285th scale with the exception of the length.  The length of the model is 2 scale feet too long, which is interesting because the truck bed actually looks a little short.  All the extra length seems to be in the cab area.

I’ll check out the Puma IFV once I get one.  If you have one and a digital caliper please measure one for me and send me the dimensions.

Edit (7/24/12)
I think it’s worth mentioning here that it not my intention to beat up GHQ in this post.  I am a HUGE fan of their products and have been for over 30 years and I prefer their products to their competitors.  Anyone that reads my blog regularly will know this.  As a matter of fact, a large percentage of my posts are about their products and how happy I am with them ….. but if there is a problem with a product and I know about it, I’ll let you know.
