More Progress on the USS Wasp Superstructure

Added all the doors, ladders and some vent thingies on the outside of the stacks.  Also began construction of the antenna/radar/sensor towers.

I’m actually beginning to feel like the end of this project is near.  There is virtually no end to the level of detail I can add to this model … but the bottom line is that it’s a gaming piece, not a museum quality model.  There is plenty of detail yet to be applied but I’m not going to go nuts with tiny details that will make the model too fragile to use for it’s intended purpose.

USS Wasp Progress Today

Added some more graphics to the deck (numbers) and worked a bit on the interior bay, finalized the lighting and added a few details to the exterior of the hull.

Opps

Quite often when you make a fiberglass mold there will be damage to the master, especially if the master is a bit fragile.  Removing a rigid master from a rigid mold can be a little tricky since neither one likes to bend.  Luckily the bow broke off nice and clean and was a piece of cake to replace again.

USS Wasp Bow Mold Prep

I had intended this USS Wasp to be a one of a kind scratchbuilt model … but a few people nave inquired about commissioning me to build one for them too.  So I decided to make a mold of the bow section to ensure future models were as accurate as this one.

Shaping the bow of the USS Wasp

It’s looking like a bit of a disaster right now … but it’s all part of the process.  First low density foam was applied and shaped down to the approximate shape desired and then sanded down a bit more so it would be slightly under final desired profile.  Then a whole bunch of bondo is applied over the foam and it will be shaped down to the final shape.

Progress on the USS Wasp

Originally when I started this project I thought I was going to modify the 1/350th scale model that I bought … but it seems I’m going the scratchbuild route and just using the kit for reference and scaling everything up and rebuilding everything from scratch.

The flight deck is coming along and the main superstructure has taken it’s basic shape.  Now to add details to the superstructure.

Al Sijood Palace in 1/285th Scale

Right now I am working on this new piece. This is the Al Sijood Palace in Baghdad Iraq. This will be a resin cast kit that comes in several pieces. I’ve taken some liberties in scaling this building down, the actual building in 1/285th scale would be about 16″ long … I’ve cheated a bit and got it down to a more reasonable 10″ long while still maintaining an impressive size. So far I have done about 75% of the front facade, see the image of the real building to see the area that I’m working on right now. This is pretty early in the development of this product, many more details will be added to the facade pictured below.
